JS Fellow receives prestigious award
Dana Shuqom, the Country Director for AMIDEAST in Jordan and 2014 John Smith Fellow, was honored by The International Alliance for Women (TIAW) for her efforts to advance women’s economic empowerment in Jordan. The TIAW awarded her its “World of Difference 100 Award” during its Global Forum, held on 26th March 2014 in Washington, DC. The award recognizes men and women who have advanced women’s issues on a local or global level. Recipients of the award include Cherie Blair a year ago and the first lady of Namibia this year.
Over the past decade, Dana has been an avid supporter of women’s economic empowerment, working to increase access and membership of young women in business associations; helping females open or expand their businesses; and building awareness among women of their economic rights as guaranteed by religious and civil laws.
TIAW particularly recognized her flagship project “Woman to Woman”, which matched orphaned young women with female business leaders, in a comprehensive mentorship and internship program which helped these underprivileged youth gain work experience, learn valuable life skills, and escape the cycle of poverty.
Currently, in her capacity as the head of AMIDEAST’s Jordan office, she oversees the Arab Women's Entrepreneurship Project (AWEP) in Jordan, a Citi Foundation-funded project that provides training, mentorship, and other support to women who aspire to entrepreneurship. She will also oversee the implementation of Skills for Success, an employability training program launched by AMIDEAST, with the support of the Union for the Mediterranean, to assist unemployed young women bridge the gap between secondary school and the workplace.
Earlier this month, Dana was invited by TIAW to join its selected group of Global Ambassadors. TIAW’s Global Ambassadors are influential global travelers who are chosen for extensive influence and substantive practical business knowledge in the areas of women’s leadership, economic development, entrepreneurship, and/or public policy.
Dana's JS action plan will build upon this work to design an awareness and advocacy campaign to challenge attitudes and promote the role of women in Arab society with regards to their economic rights.
