The John Smith Associate Fellowship in Good Governance for GCC countries

Building on the successful work done by the Trust and the British Council over the last two decades in the FSU and MENA regions* the new John Smith Associate Fellowship in Good Governancefor GCC countries will provide an opportunity to young professionals in the Gulf region to develop their skills and ideas, and to participate in a series of structured conversations on issues that are of direct significance to their own societies, as well as the global community.

The Associate Fellowship is intended for GCC citizens aged under 35 years, and who already have shown a commitment to contribute to their respective societies through their professional work, their academic research, or their engagement with civil society and the voluntary sector in their respective countries.

Scottish Parliament Interior

The first “John Smith Associate Fellowship in Good Governance” will be held in February–March 2016*. The first part of the Fellowship will be a preparatory weekend event in Ras al Khaimah (UAE) on 26-28 February 2016. The event will consist of a series of workshops and team building sessions exploring the themes of the Fellowship, and providing training skills in areas such as leadership and public speaking. Representatives from the institutions helping to deliver the Fellowship, St Andrews University, Oxford University and the British Council, together with John Smith Trustees will participate in the event. The event will also include a meeting of current GCC John Smith Trust alumni.***

 The second part of the Fellowship will be a study visit to the UK from Monday 7 March to Wednesday 16 March 2016.  The visit will encompass an intensive programme of activities in Scotland, Oxford and London where the Associate Fellows will be able to share views and experiences with British counterparts in their respective areas of interest. There will be an opportunity to interact with British decision-makers at different levels during meetings with the Scottish Government and Parliament, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the UK Parliament and other institutions.

The Fellowship is a life-long experience. On the successful completion of the programme the Associate Fellows will join the vibrant network of John Smith Trust alumni that already includes more than four hundred professionals in around fifteen countries. In 2017, those who successfully complete the programme will be invited to join the new John Smith Senior Fellowship which is about to be launched.

“The John Smith Associate Fellowship in Good Governance” for young thinkers and leaders in the GCC states is an initiative of the John Smith Trust, and is delivered in partnership with the British Council and St Andrews University in Scotland, and is funded as part of the UK government’s Gulf strategy.
