Ali Alsabbagh is a Media and Public Relations Strategist for Bahrain Petroleum Company. He was previously a Senior Business Development Officer at the Economic Development Board in Bahrain, an autonomous agency responsible for attracting investment. In this role he advised key foreign investors on Bahraini economic regulations and provides industry intelligence across several sectors. Ali has also been extensively involved in not-for-profit initiatives aimed at educating the youth and the general public about entrepreneurship development, business ethics and the use of social media in business. His current focus has been on increasing awareness of media laws affecting freedom of speech in the Gulf, particularly in Bahrain.
As a John Smith Fellow Ali is keen to improve the ethical and professional standards in Bahraini social media. His Action Plan will focus on raising awareness among social media users in Bahrain about the importance of employing a rigorous fact-based approach when reporting on politics, corruption or social justice. The beneficiaries of Ali’s Plan include the computer-literate general public, civil society organisations, the media, and the Bahraini public institutions.
