Islam Al Tayeb

Islam Al Tayeb is a Research Analyst for the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Bahrain. Her role includes identifying and monitoring security, political-systemic and policy threats in the MENA region; researching and analysing environmental, water and food security in the Gulf region; and providing legal expertise and research on security sector reform in the Arab world. In 2012 she also assisted in the organisation of the Manama Dialogue on Regional Security.

She has a degree in Legal Practice from the BPP Law School in the UK, in addition to an LLM in Human Rights Law from SOAS. Prior to her role at the IISS, Islam worked as a Legal Trainee at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP.

Islam believes that social cohesion and the development of a shared national identity are fundamental to establishing an effective rule of law in Bahrain. Her objectives as a John Smith Fellow, therefore, are to build an inclusive Bahraini identity by advocating the importance of dialogue through media, public discussions, and education.
