Khalil Almarzooq is a prominent figure in the International & Political Affairs of the Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, the largest opposition party in Bahrain, where he is the Secretary General Assistant. In this role he contributes directly to the strategic direction of the Al Wefaq society and is one of the key decision makers. Khalil also served as the first deputy speaker of the Bahrain Representative Council, before his resignation in February 2011. Prior to this Khalil was the Chairman of the Legislative and Legal Affairs committee for four consecutive terms from 2006-2010 and has been ranked by many observers as one of the most prominent politicians and parliamentarians in Bahrain.
Khalil has also garnered significant political expertise outside of Bahrain as a member of the Asian Inter-Parliamentary Union, becoming the Deputy Chairman in 2010. He is also a former Board Member of the Executive Council of the Organisation of Parliamentarians for Global Action and a member of the Parliamentary Friendships Committees for Germany, Singapore and the European Union.
Khalil´s Action Plan intends to focus on accountability in Bahrain. His aim is to implement the constitutional and legal framework necessary to fight impunity and bring officials to account; ensure the independence and impartiality of those responsible for fighting political impunity and enforcing the laws; and ensuring that society has the means to hold members of state institutions to account.
