Mai Matar is a Judge at the Judicial Supreme Council in Bahrain presiding over a Civil Court Circuit. She is the first ever female judge to hold this position. She also serves on the Judicial Appointments Committee and is a Commissioner of the Prisoners & Detainees Rights Commission. Prior to her judicial appointment in 2010 Mai acted as a Prosecutor at the Bahraini Public Prosecution Service.
Mai’s Action Plan, ‘Courts of the Future’, will build upon an existing appetite for judicial reform amongst the general public to establish new, more efficient courts that operate in a parallel system to fast-track new cases while the old courts continue to reduce the backlog. She plans to start small – with the lower courts - but build upwards.
