“There is a need for international recognition of organisations like BRAVO in many countries around the world. Nada is working to achieve that recognition so that citizens can be supported in achieving their human rights.” Brian Brivati, Academic Programme Director
Dr Nada Dhaif is a Bahraini oral and dental surgeon who set up her own private practice in 2002. She is also Founder of the Bahrain Rehabilitation & Anti-Violence Organisation (BRAVO). BRAVO is the first NGO of its kind in Bahrain and the Gulf region; its mission being to to end the practice of torture or violence and to support without discrimination those affected by torture, violence and human rights violations.
Nada established BRAVO following her own experiences of the Bahraini uprisings in February and March 2011 when she was one of twenty medical professionals arrested, tortured and imprisoned for treating pro-democracy protestors. Nada was exonerated in June 2012 following an appeal. Since its establishment BRAVO has helped many victims of violence and torture through its mental and physical rehabilitation programmes, while also advocating against the practice of torture in Bahrain through the UN Human Rights Council.
Nada’s action plan is to obtain ECOSOC status. If achieved this would give BRAVO consultative status in the United Nations Economic and Social Council enhancing its capacity to meet its goals.
