Maryam Al Rayes

“Having worked at the highest level of Iraqi politics as a special adviser to the Prime Minister, Maryam's action is to now run for office in her own right.” Brian Brivati, Academic Programme Director

Maryam Al-Rayes is a Political Advisor to the former Prime Minister of Iraq, Nouri Al-Maliki. Maryam started working for the Prime Minister in 2006 as a Foreign Affairs Advisor, before becoming Political Advisor in 2010. She has previously been a Member of the Iraqi National Assembly and has also trained as a Lawyer at the University of Baghdad. As a Member of the National Assembly, Maryam sat on the Legal Committee and was a Rapporteur to the committee responsible for writing Iraq’s Constitution.

Maryam’s action plan centres on her return to the political forefront where she hopes to address the marginalisation of women in Iraq by drafting legislation that ensures gender equality across all levels of society.
