Muadh Al Hinai

Muadh Al Hinai is the head of the Food and Hygiene Department at the Ministry of Regional Municipalities in Oman. Over the last 11 years Muadh has been involved with several committees, initiatives and programmes aimed at improving awareness and accountability in the field of food safety. He has also played a role in the organisation of several international conferences on food safety.

Muadh finished his first degree in Food Science in 1999 at the Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, where he returned in 2004 to do his Masters in Food Science and Nutrition. For the intervening five years he worked as a health inspector until he took up his current post in 2002. In 2009 he returned to university, this time at the Dublin Institute of Technology in Ireland, to study for his MSc in Food Safety Management.

Muadh is now involved in the preparation of new guidelines on food safety standards which aim to replace existing regulations. One of the problems he faces is that food safety laws in Oman are not the prerogative of one department, but rather fragmented through different departments. The effect of this is that different authorities continue to apply their own regulations disregarding Oman’s first National Food and Safety Law which came in 2008.

Muadh´s Action Plan is to pave the way for the creation of an independent food safety authority in Oman.
