Application Method

Applications must comprise of:

2) An up to date CV

3) One colour digital passport sized photo

The Next Programme

The Trust currently runs three programmes a year: two Rule of Law programmes for Fellows from the Middle East & Gulf and one Fellowship Programme for Fellows from the Former Soviet Union.

The next Rule of Law Fellowship Programme for participants from the Middle East & Gulf will take place from 31st October - 20th November 2014. The application process for this programme is now closed.


The ideal candidate will be aged 25-40, with a track record of personal achievement, and working in fields such as politics, administration, business, the media, and civil society.

Good written and spoken English is essential. A minimum level of IELTS of 6.0 is normally needed for successful candidates. Candidates may be required to take an IELTS test at the final stage of the selection process. The costs of testing must be met by the candidate.


Selection is based on a combination of the leadership potential of the applicant and the quality of the action plan they propose.


Interview may either be in person or via web-based video conference call. Please be prepared to be interviewed in either manner.

In addition to the online application form, the John Smith Trust requires 2 written references for each short listed applicant – one from your current employer and one additional reference. This additional reference might be from a previous employer, a partner organisation or another individual you have worked with who is able to talk in detail about your skills and experience.

Follow up

Applicants must agree to attend a three-day Follow-up Conference either six months (Middle East) or one year (Former Soviet Union) after their initial Fellowship Programme to present progress on their action plan. The Follow-up conference usually coincides with the next Fellowship cycle.

All arrangements, travel tickets and accommodation will be arranged and paid for by the John Smith Trust.
