Week one - Scotland


  • Fellows arrive in Edinburgh
  • Individual meetings with JST team and Welcome evening
  • Induction
  • Workshop with Alex Just, Pagefield Global Council: Getting the most out of your Programme
  • Meeting with First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon
  • Fireside chat with David Ward, General Global NCAP and friend of John Smith, in conversation with Catherine Smith
  • Scotland in context, with Duncan Hamilton, Advocate and former SNP member of Scottish Parliament
  • Welcome dinner with guest speaker, Alice Thompson
  • Visit to Scottish Parliament
  • Thematic small group workshops on equality and inclusion, rural development, policy development and influencing
  • Regeneration of a city: visit to Dundee, including presentation and discussion with Councillor John Alexander, SNP, Dundee City Council and visit to Abertay University
  • Individual attachments
  • Leadership weekend in Oxfordshire with JST staff and Eve Poole, Clore Social Leadership


Week two - London


  • Day in Parliament
  • Individual attachments meetings 
  • Free weekend



Week three - London


  • Panel discussion with Peter Knowles, Editor, BBC Parliament: The role of media in democracy
  • Workshop with returning Fellows: Media in Russia and Central Asia
  • Welcome dinner with JST Trustees
  • Keynote speech, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe: Policing in the 21st century
  • Workshop with returning Fellows: Tackling corruption in the FSU: experience in Moldova
  • Meeting withRushanara Ali, MP for Bethnal Green and Bow
  • Presentation and discussion with FCO, DfID: British engagement in Central Asia
  • Lunch and discussion with civic activists:Civic activism in Bethnal Green
  • Round-table hosted by the Centre for Contemporary Central Asia and the Caucasus at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies: Obstacles and prospects for good governance in Central Asia
  • Presentation and discussion with Lord Adonis: Good governance in government
  • Event at Intelligence Squared: Words that changed the world
  • Workshop with Baroness Ashton: Negotiation masterclass
  • Group thematic weekends outside of London



Week four - London


  • Workshop with Alex Just, Pagefield International: Debate training
  • Fellows’ debate Chaired by Lord Boateng
  • Keynote speech, Lord Green, Conservative politician, former Minister of State for Trade and Investment, former Group Chairman of HSBC Holdings plc, in conversation with Baroness Ashton: Reflections on leadership
  • Panel discussion with Sergei Guriev, Chief Economist, EBRD:From grassroots social entrepreneurship to strategic national infrastructure
  • Fellows’ action plan presentations to Fellows and friends of the Trust. Chaired by friends of the Trust.               
  • Final reception, hosted by Liane Saunders Strategy Director and Strategic Programmes Coordinator at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
